1. What is your favorite part of PM?
-My favorite part about Project Makeover is the ability to get involved in and learn about the local Gainesville community. As UF students, we gain so much from the Gainesville community. Project Makeover has allowed me, and thousands of others, the opportunity to positively impact these schools for years to come. It is worth all the time and energy to see the excitement on the student and faculty’s faces each year on Monday morning.
2. What is your favorite memory?
-My favorite PM memory is walking around the school with the kids after my first makeover at Terwilliger Elementary. We had painted their picnic tables with different diverse historical figures and the young girl I was showing around pointed to the Rosa Parks portrait and said, “That’s so cool she looks just like me!”. I love creating a learning environment where students feel seen and included!
3. Why should people care about PM?
People should care about PM because it truly makes a difference. Not only do we transform schools, but we also impact the college students/community members volunteering. Over the course of one weekend and under $15,000 we paint, landscape, build and clean an elementary school campus. This entire project is led and run by college students in hopes of improving the learning environment for local students.
4. How did you get involved with PM?
My freshman year RA was on the Planning Team for Project Makeover and told my whole floor about its mission. I ended up volunteering my freshman year at Stephan Foster and absolutely fell in love. I was so inspired by my fellow students and knew I wanted to get more involved with planning the actual event. Since then, I have been a captain, Head Coordinator, and now Executive Director! I’m so grateful for the opportunity and love being hands-on with everything from fundraising to project planning.
5. What do you want to tell someone who has never been a part of PM?
Volunteer!!! I can’t stress enough how fun and worthwhile it is to give 3 hours of your day over Makeover Weekend. You will be surrounded by people who are passionate about helping others and making the world a better place.
6. Why we do Mini?
Mini-Makeover is an event we do every Fall semester. Over the course of one day, we hold a less comprehensive Makeover with just our team. This allows us to impact more schools while also training our team to lead volunteers to come spring semester. I love Mini because it reminds me of our purpose. It is easy to get lost in the fundraising and event planning and forget that at the end of the day, we are here to have fun, give our time, and transform a school.
